Set up by Chinese rail technology company CRRC Zhuzhou Institute and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST)–Wuxi Research Institute, the new company will focus on advanced technology for polishing and spraying parts for the auto, rail, aerospace and shipping industries.

Wuxi city's highest official, Li Xiaomin attended the launch ceremony for the project, where he met with various project leaders including Lu Gang, Party secretary of HUST, Ding Rongjun, president of CRRC Zhuzhou Institute and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Ding Han, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The 150-million-yuan ($22-million) project is expected to help boost the competitiveness of the local auto parts industry, which is a major industry in Huishan.

The newly-founded company will help greatly enhance the manufacturing efficiency and precision of auto parts, and aims to become a leading force in its field, according to CRRC Zhuzhou Institute.

The dean of HUST's engineering college, Ding Han said he was pleased with the contribution that the school's Wuxi-based branch institute has made after three years' hard work.

"The auto parts industry is one of the pillar industries in Wuxi's Huishan district, and we are glad to have managed to develop a type of automatic drill robot with only 300,000 yuan R&D cost, which can help solve many troublesome craft technique problems," said Ding.

The opening of the new project is also a sign that Huishan district's efforts to promote the smart manufacturing industry are paying off.

Formerly known as a traditional industrial center, the district has put in place several forward-thinking initiatives to make smart manufacturing a new economic growth point, setting up Jiangsu province's first smart manufacturing service association and becoming the first place in China to release a set of local standards for the smart manufacturing industry.

The district plans to focus on the development of smart logistics, smart factories and industrial robots during the next phase of its development.
