Tech giant Huawei Technologies and the Wuxi government signed a strategic agreement on July 1 to cooperate further in internet of things (IoT), cloud computing, big data, industrial internet, artificial intelligence (AI), internet of vehicles (IoV), and smart cities, among other fields.

A deal was also signed to locate Huawei's software development cloud project in Xishan district, as well as a cooperation project to build an IoV innovation center. Cultivating leading information and communications technology (ICT) talents and creating a strong industrial ecology are the focus of the projects, which are expected to boost Wuxi's development into a smart city.

The cooperative relationship between Wuxi and Huawei, the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world, began several years ago, and was consolidated when the world's first city-level Internet of Vehicle LTE-V2X (vehicle to everything) application demonstration area was launched last year in the city. Huawei, as a core member of the project, played an active role in promoting the infrastructural transformation of the project.

Huawei Rotating Chairman Guo Ping said that Jiangsu enterprises occupy a pivotal position in Huawei's layout of auxiliary industries, which benefit greatly from Wuxi's relevant enterprises.

"Huawei is very willing to promote closer cooperation with Wuxi when it comes to semiconductors and other fields. Orders will be placed by Huawei to help relevant industrial chain enterprises develop more quickly," said Guo. Looking into the future, Guo also expects Wuxi to work together with Huawei to build a world-class ecosystem based on Kunpeng chipsets.

Wuxi Mayor Huang Qin expressed his gratitude to Huawei for its concern and support for Wuxi's economic and social development.

Huang discussed the three major industries driving innovative development in Wuxi. The first is the new generation of information technology, led by IoT. IoT complements other strategic emerging industries including cloud computing, big data, and AI. Wuxi is actively participating in the formulation and application of relevant standards for 5G-enabled IoV, which is in line with Huawei's development trajectory.

Another important industry is smart manufacturing. Wuxi currently has nearly 120,000 manufacturing enterprises that are actively transforming and upgrading themselves, and Huawei is invited to join them.

The modern service industry is also an area of focus. Wuxi is located in the geometric center of the Yangtze River Delta and is easily accessed by airport, high-speed rail, port and other transportation means. Wuxi's plan to accelerate the construction of a nationwide comprehensive transportation hub will also provide a more convenient and efficient environment for enterprises located in the city.
