Over 1,000 young athletes took part in the Wuxi Taihu Fitness-for-All Taekwondo Open in Wuxi Sports Park from Aug 24 to 25.
The competition, sponsored by the Wuxi Sports Federation, is part of the 2019 Wuxi Fitness-for-All Sports Meet. It aims to promote the development of taekwondo in Wuxi and attract more young people to take part in the sport.
Most of the participants were around 10 years old, with the youngest just 4 years old. During the two-day competition, the children competed as individuals and in groups. Professional judges were invited to ensure a fair competition.
Ever since the State Council issued new guidelines on the implementation of the country's Healthy China initiative and the promotion of public health, Wuxi has organized a variety of sports competitions, including taekwondo, football, table tennis and badminton.
Wuxi is now home to about 200 taekwondo clubs, and there are over 50,000 people currently practicing the martial art. The city has been chosen as the host of the 2021 World Taekwondo Championships.
