The song Tai Hu Mei ("the Beauty of Taihu Lake"), recently ranked second among China's top 10 city theme songs, the Wuxi Federation of Literary Art Circles reported on Jan 16.
The "Singing for China" event, sponsored by the Chinese Musicians' Association, collected 2,342 songs from around 500 cities throughout the country over a period of six months to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
Tai Hu Mei, which was selected as Wuxi's city song in 2002, was written by Ren Hongju and Long Fei and performed by Cheng Guilan. The melodic song contains lyrics about natural resources and views of Taihu Lake and also describes people's daily lives along the lake.
The popular song eventually led to Wuxi being named the "pearl of Taihu Lake", which was handed down by generations all over the country.
