The Wuxi Sunan Shuofang International Airport's first direct freight flight to Osaka, Japan, left at 12:30 pm and returned at 6 pm on March 21.
The flight, carrying 25 tons of medical protective supplies and electronic parts, was launched by Shanghai YTO Express (Logistics) Co. Wuxi will have six overseas cargo air flights to Osaka each week.
"The freighter is expected to bring convenience to trade and transport between Wuxi and Japan," said a staff member at Jiangsu JD-Link International Logistic Co. The company has transported goods weighing over 10 tons on the new air route.
Japan has long been one of Wuxi's major trading partners. In 2019, Wuxi's total import and export value to Japan reached $11.25 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.4 percent and accounting for 12.2 percent of the city's total imports and exports.
A representative of Wuxi Commerce Bureau said the Sino-Japan cargo air route will promote the business recovery of the supply chain of aviation import and export preference enterprises in southern Jiangsu province in such sectors as electronic information, automobile manufacturing, machinery production and e-commerce.
Wuxi Sunan Shuofang International Airport plays an important role in helping enterprises resume operations and in transporting medical protective supplies for COVID-19 control in Jiangsu. The import and export cargo volume of the airport reached 1,243 tons from March 1 to 20, an increase of 74.8 percent over February.
