The medical team at the infectious diseases department of the Wuxi No 5 People's Hospital was inducted into the 2020 Wuxi Taihu Talent Plan during the Taihu Talent Summit 2020 in Wuxi on Aug 5.
Led by Zhang Wenhong, who is also the head of the Center for Infectious Disease at Huashan Hospital of Fudan University in Shanghai, the team will receive financial support of 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) for being a part of the talent plan.
"China's prevention and control work for the novel coronavirus has achieved significant results mostly because of science and technology," said Zhang, before pointing out how the COVID-19 outbreak has highlighted the importance of science and technology in the medical industry.
"For the first time in history, a new pathogen can be identified within 10 days, and be detected within 20 days following an outbreak," he added.
Zhang said that the Wuxi talent plan shows respect for talents and technology and will lead the development of medical innovation.
"Thanks to Wuxi's support, young members of our team will be able to receive due pay when serving the country and the city," he said.
According to Zhang, the biomedicine industry will play an important role in enhancing the public health system. As Wuxi shows great competitiveness in the industry, Zhang expects his team to cooperate with experts in Shanghai to provide a reference model for the construction of integrated industries, disciplines and public health systems in the Yangtze River Delta.
During the summit, Zhang also proposed cooperation among relevant professionals in the Yangtze River Delta to jointly promote the development of public health and win the fight against the virus.
