Wuxi recently implemented 13 measures to make Taihu Lake both safer and healthier.
The measures include establishing a normalized dredging mechanism for 500 meters along the Wuxi section of Taihu Lake, setting up an algae enclosure along the 40 kilometers of shoreline within the year and disposing of cyanobacteria offshore.
Wuxi is testing out an algae enclosure at Shibawan. The cyanobacteria are removed using motorized boats or automatically through the use of an intelligent platform, which effectively prevents the accumulation of the bacteria in the coastal waters of Taihu Lake.
More deep-well algae control platforms are currently under construction in Wuxi as well, including at Fudu Port in Yixing and Zhangqiao Port in Binhu district.
Wuxi will start dredging and renovating the river bank this year at areas with heavy sediment pollution such as Gonghuwan, Meiliang Lake, and Zhushan Lake, where blue-green algae outbreaks frequently occur. Emergency ecological dredging of Lihu Lake and canals will also be carried out to clean the interior of the lake.
In addition to stacking and natural drying, the cleaned sludge will be accumulated into islands and built up into wetlands, aiming to help improve water quality in Wuxi fundamentally.
