The renewable energy industry has been developing rapidly in recent years in China and has made significant advancement both at home and abroad, said Ren Yuzhi, deputy director of New Energy and Renewable Energy Department, National Energy Administration. He added that the photovoltaic industry has become the nation's strategic emerging industry, and is in a globally dominant position to lead technical advances and reduce costs.
However, there are still many obstacles to overcome when it comes to the practical application of renewables. Apart from technical bottle necks related to "green electricity" generation such as the use of hydrogen, power storage, nuclear power, materials innovation, topics of concern such as grid parity, energy saving, and consumer market cultivation are also demanding increased attention.

To apply renewable energy in efficient applications requires efforts throughout the whole industrial chain, including scientific research, manufacturing, market supply and end-users. Ren urged the industry to expedite technical updates in basic fields like key materials such as silicon crystals, to deepen integration with information and high-technology like big data, and to foster a stable and sustainable consumer market.
