A new park-and-ride lot for Taihu Square Station of Wuxi's metro line 1 opened to the public on Aug 4, providing more choices of transport for passengers.
The underground park-and-ride lot is located on the west side of the intersection of Qingyang Road and Taihu Avenue, as well as on the south side of Yonghe Road. It provides 244 parking spaces for drivers.
Wuxi Metro Group has taken such park-and-ride lots into consideration when constructing new metro lines, aiming to encourage the use of public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in Wuxi. In addition, Shenglimen Station of metro line 1 and Qinglongshan Station of metro line 2 are providing this service.
Park-and-ride lots are car parks that are connected to public transportation, and they play an important role in urban traffic management, according to officials.
Currently, the new park-and-ride lot for Taihu Square Station provides one hour free parking for cars, according to Gao Haohua, director of the park-and-ride lot project from Wuxi Metro Group. Gao added that a monthly parking option is available for 240 yuan ($37.10) per month.
Gao noted that more park-and-ride lots will be built around metro stations on line 5 and line S1 to improve the links between road and underground transportation.
