Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province has continued its efforts to renovate and upgrade a number of public toilets in order to improve people's living environment.
The upgraded public toilets are not only spacious, clean, and tidy, but also equipped with sensor lights, ventilation systems, and a special area for leisure.
Special facilities, such as dressing rooms, nursing rooms, and wheelchair accessible toilets, are also available.
Wuxi has finished construction on 17 new high-quality public toilets in its downtown area this year, while 20 additional ones are still under construction.
According to local authorities, the city has set the goal that a total of 100 urban public toilets and 300 rural public toilets will be built by the end of this year.
The efforts are in response to the nationwide "toilet revolution" launched in 2015 to increase the number and improve the sanitation of public toilets at tourist sites. The campaign expanded to improve public toilets in cities and to build better private toilets in rural areas.
Wuxi has also set up a toilet opening alliance, which encourages hotels, guesthouses, shopping malls, supermarkets, enterprises, and institutions to open their internal toilets to the public for free. The alliance now has over 500 members.
In addition, local authorities plan to launch an e-map of toilets included in the toilet opening alliance on the Lingxi app, aiming to provide more convenience to local residents and visitors.
