Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu generated 1.4 trillion yuan ($220.93 billion) in GDP in 2021, up 8.8 percent from 2020, according to a statement released by the local statistical bureau on Jan 21.
The added value of the primary industry, secondary industry and tertiary industry reached 13.03 billion yuan, 671.05 billion yuan, and 716.24 billion yuan respectively, year-on-year increases of 1.3 percent, 9.9 percent and 7.9 percent.
The city's industrial production continued to develop steadily in 2021. The added value of the city's industries above designated size was up 12.9 percent year-on-year, reaching 492.64 billion yuan. The industrial structure has increased in quality, and the high-tech manufacturing industry has performed well, with a year-on-year increase of 20.4 percent.
Thanks to support from innovation platforms in Wuxi such as the National Innovation Center for Integrated Circuit Characteristic Processing, Packaging, and Testing, the output of discrete semiconductor devices, integrated circuits, and lithium-ion batteries increased rapidly, up 44.6 percent, 41.8 percent, and 31.5 percent year-on-year respectively in 2021.
The high-quality development of the industrial chain has driven the growth of the service industry. From January to November 2021, the operating income of the city's producer services, high-tech services, science and technology services, and cultural and creative services increased by 25.1 percent, 18.9 percent, 21.5 percent, and 19.6 percent year-on-year, respectively.
The total value of imports and exports exceeded $100 billion for the first time, reaching about $105.7 billion in Wuxi in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 20.4 percent. The city's trade with countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative reached $27.24 billion, accounting for 25.8 percent of the city's total imports and exports, a year-on-year increase of 2.3 percentage points.
In 2021, the city's total retail sales of consumer goods increased by 10.4 percent year-on-year to more than 330.6 billion yuan, with various shopping festivals and coupons sponsored by the local government.
