Wuxi's consumer market saw a flurry of activity during the seven-day Spring Festival holiday which started on Jan 31, according to outlets from Wuxi commerce bureau on Feb 6.
During this period, 77 key commercial and trade enterprises achieved retail sales of 1.89 billion yuan ($296.8 million), a year-on-year increase of 10.2 percent, said the bureau.
Many shopping complexes promoted events in celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. Wuxi's 13 main shopping complexes, including Wuxi Costal City and Wanda Plaza, saw their total sales increase by 5.1 percent year-on-year to 537 million yuan from Jan 31 to Feb 6.
The bureau said winter sports were particularly popular among Wuxi residents during the holidays thanks to the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
Local sports venues allowing people to enjoy winter sports, as well as various kinds of skiing and skating supplies, were popular among consumers.
In addition, 213 outlets of 48 restaurants took part in the Taihu Shopping Festival, offering 182 kinds of precooked Spring Festival meals. Compared to before, more people chose precooked meals and had their Chinese New Year's Eve reunion dinners at home this year to avoid the crowds in restaurants.
