Driven by the Wuxi Taihu Lake Shopping Festival, Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province saw a surge in consumption during the May Day holiday, which ended on May 4.
To stimulate consumption, the Wuxi municipal government issued 12 million yuan (1.8 million) in coupons, which can be collected and used on the Quick Pass app.
Many local residents using the coupon during the holiday. The RT-Mart on Changjiangbei Road is one of the businesses participating in the shopping festival, and the manager said that they offered 63,000 yuan in discounts from May 1 to 3 to those with coupons.

In addition to brick-and-mortar businesses, online consumption was also popular among local residents. The 100 online sales promotion activities in Wuxi were watched 414,000 times, the livestream activities about food, scenic spots, and entertainment in Binhu district were viewed 4.4 million times and the 10 livestreams on Douyin by Wanda Plaza in Xinwu district were viewed 100,000 times.
Staying at home for the holiday was also a trend among Wuxi residents. According to statistics from online grocery service supplier Dingdong Maicai, sales of crayfish in Wuxi tripled over the same period last year.
Seasonal fruits were also popular. From April 30 to May 4, Wuxi residents consumed more than 10,000 Hainan-produced honeydew melons, 7,000 Hainan-grown pineapples, and 3,000 kilograms of cherries, according to Dingdong Maicai.
