The river running through Nanchang Street is a part of the Grand Canal in Wuxi that housed this ancient kilns group on the bank. Since the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) people started digging earth, building kilns, and firing bricks along the river.

Over the following centuries, hundreds of ancient kilns went into service here, which not only supplied the building materials used for folk dwellings in Wuxi, but also for different cities across China.

Among them, Laozhongyao kiln has a history of more than 500 years. Although this ancient kiln cluster along Dayao Road are not in use anymore, its significance still can not be ignored because they brought vitality to Wuxi and witnessed its rich history.
