Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province was recently praised for its achievements in building a zero-waste city at a provincewide conference convened by the province's department of ecology and environment.
Recycling organic waste is the major measure. The Yixing Urban Sewage Resources Concept Plant, for example, treats and purifies the waste water to qualify for making coffee, brewing beer, and as simple potable water. The plant is also capable of treating the mud polluted by blue-green algae, livestock excrement, straw, and kitchen waste.

Digitalization empowers the construction of a zero-waste city. The application of digital technologies has shifted solid waste disposal from broad to finer ways. "We have developed dustbins exclusively for general industrial solid waste, which are equipped with sensors for overfilling, smoke, and more," said Wang Feibiao, president of Jiangsu Zhongman Environmental Technology Co.

The company's disposal cost of industrial solid waste has also been greatly reduced, falling to 500 yuan ($70.03) per metric ton, 1,500 yuan less than the figure for traditional disposal, Wang added.
