As one of the four pillar industries in Wuxi, biomedicine has become an important engine for the city's industrial transformation and upgrading. As of May 2025, Wuxi's biomedical sector boasted six Fortune Global 500 companies, 15 listed companies, and nearly 500 enterprises above designated size.
As of the end of November 2023, the number of domestic drug applications for market approval in Wuxi was 397 and the number of domestic drugs approved for market was 898. The cumulative number of domestic Class II and III medical devices marketed in the city reached 1,170, with one innovative medical device approved. By June 2024, the city had six biomedical industrial parks, including Wuxi International Life Science Park (Binhu district), Wuxi International Life-Science Innovation Campus (Xinwu district), and Huishan Life Science and Technology Industrial Park, aggregating over 80 percent of the city's biomedical enterprises.
The biomedical industry is capital-intensive, and sustained capital investment is a crucial foundation for continuous innovation. By June 2024, the city had established specialized funds exceeding 30 billion yuan ($4.21 billion).
