The Taihu Lake Outdoor Sports Destination in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, has recently been recognized as one of China's first high-quality outdoor sports destinations, local media reported on Oct 28.
This recognition was announced at the China Outdoor Sports Industry Conference in Dali, Yunnan province. Cities with destinations on the list will obtain financial assistance from the National Development and Reform Commission to improve their outdoor sports facilities.
The Taihu Lake Outdoor Sports Destination in Wuxi is built around the 142-kilometer shoreline of Taihu Lake, with the Binhu district and the Yixing Yangxian Ecological Tourism Resort serving as its main supporting areas.
Guided by prestigious events such as the Wuxi Marathon, the Taihu Lake International Road Cycling Race, and the Yangxian 100 Trail Challenge, the destination is emphasizing the growth of water sports, urban road-running, outdoor cycling, mountain trail running, and innovative outdoor sports projects.
The goal is to establish a benchmark for inland lake water sports in China and promote the area as a leading international urban road-running destination. It also intends to create the most scenic cycling route in Jiangnan and develop an international mountain trail-running corridor in southern Yixing. The effort seeks to develop an outdoor sports innovation demonstration base in the Yangtze River Delta, positioning the region as a globally attractive outdoor sports hub.
