The first group of tourists boarded a traditional Chinese boat at the Canal Art Park's wharf in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, on Jan 16 bound for Huangbudun Islet, marking the opening of this landmark spot.
The newly launched culture-themed travel route also set sail. Starting from the wharf at the Canal Art Park, tourists can now enjoy a boat ride along the Grand Canal in Wuxi, taking in the ancient charm of the riverbanks. Upon reaching the islet, they can visit a century-old opera stage and experience the poetic essence of the Jiangnan region.

The original cultural intellectual property "Five Gentlemen of the Water System" was also unveiled. The guardian spirit of Huangbudun Islet, named "Jinshan", features the body of a fish and a cartoon face, serving as the martial force. These images draw inspiration from local folklore and the river system along the canal, symbolizing protection, emotion, good fortune, resilience, and wisdom, respectively.
Covering an area of 625 square meters, Huangbudun Islet is an unsinkable "pearl" along the Wuxi section of the Grand Canal. From its construction in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) to a thriving canal transportation hub in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), it has witnessed countless cargo ships and travelers.
With historical anecdotes such as Lord Chunshen's (who died in 238 BC) water management and famous poet Wen Tianxiang's (1236-1283) verses, Huangbudun Islet has become a culturally rich landmark along the canal.
