With the summer heat on the wane and a crisp autumn breeze sweeping through Wuxi, the city is filled anew with the warm, inviting aroma of freshly baked mooncakes.

Though the Mid‑Autumn Festival is still a month away, local bakeries have already fired up their ovens to produce the season's most anticipated treat: hot‑out‑of‑the‑oven mooncakes. For many residents, these golden pastries evoke deep nostalgia with every flaky bite.

The craft behind these pastries is as meticulous as it is time-honored. From kneading dough and layering flaky pastry to filling and baking, each mooncake is made through a process of careful control. Bakers weigh every ingredient with precision, seal each pastry by hand, and stamp it with a traditional red mark before sliding it into the oven.

The offerings this season are as diverse as they are delicious. The undisputed favorite remains the fresh pork mooncake, whose savory juices soak into the layered crust over the course of baking, creating a crisp texture with a hint of chewiness. For those with a sweeter palate, the red bean paste variety brings back the flavors that older generations of Wuxi locals grew up with. The mixed nut version, made with walnuts, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds, delivers a satisfying crunch and is a beautiful pairing with tea. Meanwhile, the scallion oil mooncake features feather‑light pastry layers, with the fragrant aroma of scallions and lard blending into an irresistible combination.

For those eager to sample these seasonal delights firsthand, the city offers no shortage of excellent venues, ranging from time‑honored establishments to popular modern bakery chains.
