Lunar August 15 is the Mid-Autumn Festival, on which families get together at the beautiful and sweet night; therefore people consider it as a most significant festival.

On the morning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, people will have sweet-scented osmanthus taro; on the afternoon, they will have delicacies; and on the evening, families will get together to appreciate moon, enjoy moon cakes, water chestnuts and lotus roots. The custom of eating moon cakes is originated from the Tang Dynasty. At that time, citizens would collect early season rice and wear it into rice flour, so as to make sweet glutinous cakes in the Mid-Autumn Festival. Families will reunite and spend the night together. Lotus roots cannot be cut into sections to expect a happy marriage; and pear should be eaten as a whole, meaning “never split up”.
