Qian Weichang, (1912- ), was born in Qiqiaofang Village of the Hongsheng Town of Wuxi. He is a physicist, educationist and professor and president of the Shanghai University. He is one of the founders of the mechanics, applied mathematics and Chinese informatics. He found the Plate and Shell Intrinsic Unified Theory and the Nonlinear Differential Equations for Shallow Shells, invented the thin circular plate with large deflection perturbation method and it was called “method of Qian Weichang”, and the Chinese Characters and Chinese Macroscopical Shape Coding System, dominated by him, won the Shanghai Science Progress Award in 1985. In 1955, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
