Zhang Xu, (1913- ), was born in Wuxi. He is an engineer of communication engineering, professor of the Department of Electronic Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and a founder of the Institute of Optical Fiber Technology of the Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is the 1st one in China that offered the courses of “Long Distance Communication”, "Transistor Circuit" and “The Principle of Optical Fiber Communication”. He made great contributions to research and application of digital communication theory and instructed the invention of 1st batch of the transistor carrier machines. At present, he is a doctoral tutor on communication and electronic system. In 1980, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
