April 9 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of international air routes at Sunan Shuofang International Airport. In the middle of March, bilateral aviation talks between China and South Korea were successfully concluded. Meanwhile, Wuxi gained the access to Inchon International Airport in Seoul and other airports in South Korea, improving international navigation of Wuxi civil aviation.

Looking back on the past ten years, the "internationalization" of Sunan Shuofang International Airport developed steadily: on April 9, 2009, the first Wuxi-Osaka international air route was launched, marking the true cross-over of Sunan Shuofang International Airport to the international airport; in December, 2014, the port was opened wider and Asiana Airlines was introduced, making the airport becoming a truly international airport; in December, 2017, the airport opened port visa service for foreigners.

According to the latest statistics, in the past quarter, the passenger and cargo throughput of Sunan Shuofang International Airport was 1,882,900 and 32,400 tons respectively, with a year-on-year growth of 15.6% and 17.3%, of which 253,000 passengers and 10,800 tons of cargo were exported and imported, with a year-on-year growth of 7.4% and 955%. This year, the total number of airport passengers will exceed 1 million, and it is expected to reach 1.5 million within three years.

"As the second airport in the province to open international routes, the opening of the port and the speed of the promotion of international flights of Sunan Shuofang International Airport have always attracted attention in the industry." According to the introduction of the responsible person of Sunan Shuofang International Airport, up to now, the airport has opened 5 international airlines to Osaka, Bangkok, Singapore, Nha Trang and Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, with 27 flights a week, and 3 regional air routes to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, with 58 flights a week. In addition, three intercontinental freight routes from Wuxi to Hahn, Germany, Chicago and Cincinnati in the United States have been launched since May, 2018. The person in charge said that to test the "international" status of an international airport, the main indicators are the number and proportion of inbound and outbound passengers. Last year, the total number of inbound and outbound passengers of Sunan Shuofang International Airport was 940,000, accounting for 13% of the airport's passenger throughput that year, ranking 25th out of 235 general aviation airports in China and surpassing many airports of provincial capitals.

The person in charge explained that Sunan Shuofang International Airport has achieved good results in expanding international and regional passenger and cargo routes for the market advantages. First, South Jiangsu and Yangtze River Delta, including Wuxi, have strong economic strength, developed export-oriented economy, dense population and abundant passenger and freight resources. Second, the local people are rich and the market demand for outbound tourism is strong. The expansion of the international and regional routes of Sunan Shuofang International Airport has been promoted steadily. Although the total number of routes is not outstanding, the flight density of single routes has been continuously improved, with strong sustainability and high attendance and occupancy, attracting more airlines to open international and regional routes, which is conducive to enhancing Wuxi's popularity in the world.
