Nestled in Southeast China, there is a city known as the pearl of Taihu Lake, a place where plum blossoms announce the arrival of spring, where the cuisine is sweet, and where warm smiles greet you at every turn. Yes, I'm talking about none other than Wuxi.
My name is Abike Barker, and I am a second-year master's student in Design at Jiangnan University. When I reflect on my journey in Wuxi, I think of firsts: the first time I arrived, the first time I tried Wuxi xiaolongbao and braised square ribs, the first time I made mooncakes, and the first time I wandered the entire length of Nanchang Street, stopping to have my caricature drawn by an awe-inspiring artist.
My first Spring Festival in China was nothing short of magical. I still remember standing in Huishan Ancient Town, watching a 100-meter-long dragon dance along the path, hovering above crowds of mesmerized tourists. I also recall the first time I stepped inside the Wuxi Grand Theatre, having only admired its lakefront majesty from the outside. That day, I finally understood why it was called Grand.

Being the only person from my country in Wuxi, at least that I am aware of, and with no family currently in China, there are moments when I feel homesick, longing for the familiarity of my friends, family, and the serenity of my hometown. Coming from Guyana, a country covered in 75 percent rainforest, I found solace in Wuxi's natural beauty, its lakefront views, tree-lined streets, and lush green spaces. Over time, the people of Wuxi became my extended family, welcoming me with open arms and, of course, some curiosity.
I have traveled to many cities in China, but every time I step off a train and hear the familiar announcement, "You are arriving at Wuxi Station", I feel like I have arrived home. I look forward to continuing my journey, deepening my understanding of Chinese culture, being an ambassador of my own, and sharing the beauty of China with the world.
