Forty fully loaded containers were loaded onto a train in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, on July 18, bound for South America via Shanghai Waigaoqiao Port, marking the launch of the sea-rail intermodal route connecting the Chinese city with South America.
By harmonizing railway transportation with port shipping resources, this route establishes a seamless link between maritime and land transportation, slashing transit time by eight to 10 days and boosting transportation efficiency by 30 percent.
In the first half of 2025, Wuxi saw the shipment of 2,922 twenty-foot equivalent units via China-Europe intermodal trains departing from Wuxi, marking a 19 percent increase from the previous year. Wuxi West Station dispatched 9,048 freight trains during the same period, reflecting a year-on-year surge of 72 percent. Furthermore, 13,790 TEUs were transported through sea-rail combined transportation methods in the city during the initial six months of the year, marking a remarkable 119 percent year-on-year rise.
Looking ahead to the second half of the year, the city has outlined objectives that include ensuring the smooth operation of 650 China-Europe intermodal trains, expediting the expansion and renovation of railway freight yards, and establishing overseas container return points in Central Asia.
