Mohammad Khaja Nazeeruddin, a world-renowned expert in perovskite solar technology, has been setting efficiency benchmarks from his base in Wuxi.
Since joining UtmoLight as chief scientist in 2020, he has guided the company to break the world record for perovskite module efficiency nine times.
"The global photovoltaic industry urgently needs next-generation breakthroughs, and perovskite technology has emerged as the clear leader in that race," Nazeeruddin said.
Under his leadership, UtmoLight has built the world's largest and most intelligent 150-megawatt perovskite photovoltaic module production line. In 2025, the company commissioned the industry's first gigawatt-scale perovskite manufacturing facility. UtmoLight is also the first player in the sector to secure rigorous international stability certification.
Beyond industry, Nazeeruddin has been fostering closer ties between research institutions and the private sector. He holds a visiting professorship at Southeast University, where he directs the Perovskite Photovoltaics and Integrated Optoelectronics Research Institute, and has been instrumental in setting up the Perovskite International Joint Laboratory with the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
Reflecting on his decision to locate his work in Wuxi, Nazeeruddin credited the city's strong manufacturing base, forward-looking policies and sustained government support.
"Our success is not ours alone," he said. "Wuxi, a major hub of China’s photovoltaic sector, has been indispensable. It offers the ideal ecosystem for transformative innovation, and we welcome others to join us in this endeavor."
