Envision Energy, a leading Chinese provider of green technology, has been stepping up its efforts in the integrated development of energy storage and wind power, positioning itself as a systems solutions provider amid the renewable energy sector's crucial transition period.
The shift comes as China's wind power sector graduates from simple capacity expansion to focusing on systemic value creation and grid reliability.
Lou Yimin, senior vice-president of Envision Energy, said the fundamental nature of the wind power sector is undergoing a profound transformation.
"The industry is shifting from asking 'how much electricity can be generated' to 'how much system value can be created'," Lou said during the 2026 China Wind Power exhibition in Beijing, held last week.
"In the past, the rule was to generate as much as possible whenever there was wind. Today, a wind turbine must act as an intelligent node — it must generate power when the grid needs it and hold back when it doesn't."
This pivot aligns directly with broader macroeconomic challenges facing the rapidly expanding sector.
Pan Huimin, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's new and renewable energy department, recently cautioned that the industry must navigate growing structural headwinds despite its massive scale.
"Wind power development is currently confronting mounting grid absorption pressures, tightening factor supplies, declining project yields following full power marketization and the insufficient realization of green environmental value," Pan said, emphasizing the urgent need to accelerate integrated energy models.
To address these exact challenges of grid absorption and fluctuating power prices, Envision has accelerated the deployment of its artificial intelligence-enabled wind-storage turbine.
Unlike traditional models where wind turbines and storage batteries are merely co-located, Envision's approach involves deep coupling at the hardware, control and software levels.
This deep integration allows the system to share components such as transformers, reducing overall construction costs by some 10 percent while potentially boosting wind farm revenue by over 20 percent through optimized power dispatching, said the company.
Huang Hu, vice-president of Envision's wind turbine and equipment product platform, said the transition of renewable energy from a "supplementary" source to a "primary" power source requires unprecedented reliability.
"The biggest challenge for renewable energy to become a primary power source is its inherent volatility. To ensure a reliable power supply during peak demand periods — even when there is no wind or sunlight — energy storage must be deeply integrated into the system," Huang said.
Envision's integrated units are equipped with advanced AI capabilities, Huang said, which enable the equipment to predict weather patterns, anticipate grid load requirements and dynamically adjust output to maximize economic returns, particularly during periods of high electricity prices.
Beyond individual hardware, Envision is expanding its footprint in complex "source-grid-load-storage" integrated projects. The company is actively pioneering "green power direct-connection" models and zero-carbon industrial parks — such as its flagship project in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia autonomous region — which bypass the traditional constraints of the main power grid.
The necessity of this comprehensive approach is echoed by global industry leaders. Ben Backwell, CEO of the Global Wind Energy Council, recently pointed out that transmission infrastructure remains the most pressing global bottleneck, as grid construction struggles to keep pace with surging renewable capacity.
Wind power enterprises can no longer act merely as hardware suppliers, Backwell said, adding that they must provide comprehensive, integrated solutions — pairing wind power with energy storage and smart grid technologies — to meet real-time market demand and secure viable power tariffs in liberalized electricity markets.
