The former residence of Rong Desheng is a significant part of the Rongxiang modern architectural complex. A century ago, it marked the beginning of a journey for two brothers who committed themselves to advancing national industry. Today, the building still echoes their legacy, continuing to share their remarkable story with all who encounter it.
During their industrial ventures, brothers Rong Zongjing and Rong Desheng acquired over 10 mu (0.667 hectares) of land and began constructing the complex in 1907, a process that took over a decade.
Initially, the entrance hall, Chengyu Hall, Xiushenweiben Hall, the Flower Hall, Chengde Hall, and the living quarters were built. In 1915, the Dagong Library was established, followed by the Zhuanpan Building in 1922. The complex also features a western garden with a theater stage, Liangyi Pavilion, lotus pond, winding paths, small bridges, and rockeries, completing the architectural ensemble.
This site served not only the residence of the Rong family but also a masterpiece example that merges the characteristics of Jiangnan architecture with the charm of the Republic of China era (1912-49). One of the most well-preserved residential buildings within the complex is the Zhuanpan Building, which boasts a square layout and its exterior reflects typical Jiangnan residential characteristics.
The Zhuanpan Building was the first Rong residence to have running water. Today, the glass and staircases within are still made of original materials from 1912. Walking through the building, one can almost hear the laughter of the Rong family children from a century ago and feel the vibrant family life.
The Rong brothers devoted themselves to the national industry, establishing textile and flour industries while always remembering to give back to society. The exhibition area showcases their entrepreneurial journey and educational endeavors. In Wuxi, many of the schools and bridges they built can still be found.
Today, Rong Desheng's former residence is no longer a static museum. Through thematic exhibitions and cultural collaborations, it continues to fulfill its mission in new ways.
